Gamers have devoted countless years of collective brainpower to rescuing princesses or protecting the planet against alien invasions. This week researchers at the University of Washington will try to harness those finely honed skills to make medical discoveries, perhaps even finding a cure for HIV. A new game, named Foldit, turns protein folding into a competitive sport. Introductory levels teach the rules, which are the same laws of physics by which protein strands curl and twist into three-dimensional shapes -- key for biological mysteries ranging from Alzheimer's to vaccines. After about 20 minutes of training, people feel like they're playing a video game but are actually mouse-clicking in the name of medical science. The free program is at http://fold.it/.

Tire Danger: The Cryptic Code That Could Save Your Life

The U.S. tire industry is refusing to give American motorists the same warning given to car owners in Europe and Asia about the possible dangers of tires six years old or older. More than 100 deaths in the U.S. have been attributed to aged tires which dried out and lost their treads, even though they appeared to be safe, according to Sean Kane, who heads a private auto safety firm and consults with the federal government. With no warning from the industry or the federal government, safety experts say the only way for consumers to protect themselves is to learn how to read the cryptic code embedded on a tire's sidewall which reveals the year and week a tire was manufactured.

Ancient Seaweed Chews Confirm Age of Chilean Site

Bits of chewed-up or burned seaweed discarded more than 14,000 years ago confirm that people were in Chile at least that long ago and shed light on what their culture was like, researchers reported on Thursday. The findings at a site 10,000 miles from the Bering Strait add to an almost overwhelming pile of evidence that people were well distributed across the western Americas long before the so-called Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. And the seaweed picked up at the Monte Verde site provide a direct link to people living in the area today, some of whom also use some of the seaweed species medicinally.

A student at the University of Mississippi will leap into the final frontier of the legal system Saturday when he receives the first-ever space law certificate in the United States. Michael Dodge of Long Beach, Calif., earned the special distinction along with his law degree through the National Center for Remote Sensing, Air and Space Law at the university's law school. Any future space lawyer might have to deal with issues ranging from the fallout over satellite shoot-downs to legal disputes between astronauts onboard the International Space Station. The expanding privatization of the space sector may also pose new legal challenges.

Seven more police officers were taken off street duty Thursday as investigators look into the videotaped police beating of three shooting suspects during a traffic stop. Thirteen of the estimated 15 officers on hand during the Monday incident have been taken off the streets as investigators pore over the television news footage, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told a news conference Thursday. The video shows officers kicking, punching and beating the men, who are all black. On his syndicated radio show Thursday, the Rev. Al Sharpton, compared it with the videotaped 1991 beating of black motorist Rodney King by a group of white Los Angeles police officers.

The driver of a 1997 Honda Civic that struck and killed a dog near Cloquet is suing the dog's owners for damage done to his vehicle. Jeffery Ely was driving on the night of Jan. 4 when Fester, a miniature pinscher, squeezed past owner Nikki Munthe as she was letting in her other dog and ran out onto the road. Ely's car struck Fester, killing the 13-pound dog instantly. Now Ely is suing the Munthes for about $1,100 for damage to his car, time he had to take off from his two jobs to get the car repaired, and court fees. <respond> Do you think that Ely's lawsuit is reasonable?

A 1,000-pound manta ray was returned to the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after three years as a research subject and tourist attraction at a Bahamian resort. The massive black ray, known as "Zeus," was lowered from a helicopter on a hydraulically welded frame to ensure its safe entry into the water. It spans nearly 13 feet in diameter — including a 3-foot-wide mouth. Marine biologists had studied the creature and will now use a satellite tracking tag to monitor its movements in the open sea. Relocating the ray from its 2.7 million-gallon aquarium took more than two hours.

Amy Winehouse has been released from police custody following her arrest on suspicion of drug offenses, police sources said on Thursday. The Grammy-winning soul singer, who was arrested less than two weeks ago in an unrelated assault case and released with a warning, was detained again on Wednesday after turning herself in at an East London police station and was questioned by detectives for more than nine hours. Her latest arrest stems from a video published by a British tabloid newspaper showing the singer smoking what it said was crack cocaine. The 24-year-old entertainer has not been charged.

Chinese authorities have ordered local health officials to swiftly report all new cases of a fast-moving virus blamed for killing 28 children across the nation and infecting more than 15,000, most younger than 5. Cases of Enterovirus-71, a strain of what is often called hand, foot and mouth disease, must be reported to the Health Ministry within 24 hours of detection, officials announced Wednesday. "Some of the fatalities occurred because of late response time," said Mao Qunan, a Health Ministry spokesman. "They were sent to hospital too late, increasing the difficulty of treating them. But early detection and early treatment can help curb the outbreak."

US Group Wants FDA to Pull J&J Birth Control Patch

A U.S. advocacy group is urging the Food and Drug Administration to pull Johnson & Johnson's birth control patch from the market after studies found an increased risk of dangerous blood clots. In a petition filed with the FDA on Thursday, Public Citizen's Health Research Group said the amount of estrogen released from the Ortho-Evra patch varies widely among individual women, and those who absorb too much were at greater risk for blood clots and and other painful side effects. "The considerable safety concern of high-dose, variable estrogen exposure tips the balance of risks and benefits against the availability of Ortho-Evra as a contraceptive," wrote Sidney Wolfe, head of the research group.

In 1967, the clean-cut country boy with the mellow baritone was the first recipient of the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association, and was renowned for lending his voice to the "countrypolitan" Nashville sound, to which he was considered a pioneer. "I Want to Go With You," "Somebody Like Me," "Lonely Again" and "Turn the World Around."
