Lollapalooza 101
Written by: j. goldfarb – Posted: Fri Aug 1st, 2008
Lollapalooza has a long and memorable history as one of the best rock festivals of the century. The festival has been a launch pad into the realm of super stardom for many of the bands that have participated in the event since it began in 1991.

The festival was known as a North American tour until 1997. It then came back in 2003 to tour again. In 2004, the festival organizers decided to expand the dates to two days per city; however poor ticket sales forced the 2004 tour to be cancelled.

The first group of bands to embark with Lollapalooza was taking a chance with the novice tour. Among these brave souls were bands like Nine Inch Nails and the Violent Femmes. The following year even more bands joined the ranks. The main stage featured now-legends like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Ice Cube. The tour added a second stage for bands like Stone Temple Pilots. Eventually, more than twenty bands toured that year to thousands of screaming rock fans. With the success of the first year's tour the Lollapalooza crew decided to add more dates and more venues to the schedule. Dates extended into September and Canada was added to the trip.

By 1993 and 1994 bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and the Beastie Boys were lining up to be included in the tour. The Ramones even made an appearance in 1996. By 1997, the tour began to diversify by having Korn perform on the same stage as Snoop Dogg.
