What is Lollapalooza?

Lollapalooza is a music festival that features alternative rock, hip hop and punk bands. It also includes dance and comedy performances along with craft booths and other activities. From 1991-1997 the festival toured North America. It was revived in 2003 and from 2005 until the present, it has taken place in Grant Park, Chicago. A brief low point caused the festival to be cancelled in 2004 due to a sharp decline in ticket sales. In 2006, the Chicago Park District and Capital Sports & Entertainment agreed to a five year, $5 million deal, keeping Lollapalooza at Grant Park in Chicago until 2011.

Lollapalooza was founded by Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell in 1990. It was meant to be a farewell tour to his band and it ended up running annually until 1997.

The line up in 1991 was daringly eclectic. Bands like Nine Inch Nails and the Violent Femmes were headlining along with rappers such as Ice-T & Body Count. It crossed popular music genres and created a masterpiece. They also had non-musical features such as the Jim Rose Circus Side Show. This way it was not only a super-star rock jam but a cultural festival.
