Fashion wasn't necessarily much of a priority at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee last month. Headliners like Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson did little to impress the massive audience with their bland earth-toned threads, and even fashion freaks like Kanye West barely stood out from the rest of their fellow performers. But there was one musical act that took their appearance to the next level. De Novo Dahl donned matching yellow and red horizontally-striped outfits, quite possibly making them the most uniquely-clad ensemble to hit the festival campgrounds this year.
The group is more than just a collective of similarly-dressed young musicians. Joel Dahl (vocals / guitar), Serai Zaffiro (vocals / omnichord / percussion), Keith Lowen (vocals / bass), Matthew Hungate (vocals / keys) and Mixta Huxtable (drums) just released their sophomore album Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound, featuring tracks like the rocked-out single "Shout," '70s disco-inflected "Shakedown" and electronically-blessed "Heartbreaker."
De Novo Dahl has been on the road for the past year promoting the record, making their way across the country with bands like Low VS. Diamond, Carolina Liar and Tally Hall. This summer, the group is taking a break from touring to instead work the festival circuit, making stops in Chicago for Lollapalooza, San Francisco for the Download Festival and New Jersey for All Points West. They're hoping to schedule a tour for sometime in the fall, but are taking their sweet time making sure they are rested enough to do their thing at this summer's hottest music fests.
The band had just driven to Nashville for the day to perform at Bonnaroo, but took time out of their busy schedule to chat with Kiwibox Senior Editor Steven in the backstage media area. They divulged the name of the Nashville shop where they purchased those coordinated outfits, how much they can't stand their label mates Metallica (just kidding!) and gave us their picks for who they most wanted to see at the Nashville festival - all while looking their most dapper, of course.
