Country has always toed the line between pop and rock. Taking song structures from pop and a guitar licks from rock, country artists have been able to mix those sounds and conventions with their Southern lifestyle, turning the cowboy-based culture in an outlet for musical expression. So with a long lineage of country musicians behind her, Jessie Baylin, a New Jersey-born and L.A.-based artist, has a lot to live up to, being that she isn't actually from the South and released her debut You only a few years ago.
It comes with relief that on her sophomore album Firesight, Jessie doesn't try to be a full-out country star or even a bona fide pop one. Instead, she incorporates all the styles into a billowy full-length, one that sounds relaxed and comes from an artist who appears to simply want to make good music.
And that's exactly what she does on Firesight. Jessie, who teamed up with Norah Jones collaborator Jesse Harris among a host of others, takes roots rock, country twangs and pop flourishes and mixes them into a delicious 12-track stew, effortlessly breezing along from its upbeat opener "See How I Run" to its beautiful hidden track closer.
